McLaughlin test drives new Commodore

Tuesday 11 Dec 2012 5:33 p.m.

Just three days after signing up as a V8 Supercar driver, Kiwi Scott McLaughlin has been given an early Christmas present by his new team.

The 19-year-old got a chance to drive his all-new Commodore at a special test session.

Could he be the star of the future in the car of the future?

McLaughlin got his first taste of the all-new 2013 V8 Supercar at a hot and dry Winton in rural Victoria.

“It’s definitely a lot harder than anything I’ve ever experienced,” he says. “I've still got a lot to learn.”

The 19-year-old Kiwi is set to take up the place of Shane van Gisbergen as the youngest driver in the Supercars, while Van Gisbergen drives a different path - behind the wheel of a rally car.

After a promising test in the Maramarua Forest, Van Gisbergen is considering a competitive debut in next year’s national championship.

It's rumoured that his old team - Stone Brother Racing - were one of several Supercar outfits keen to sign the newest Kiwi racer, but McLaughlin opted for Garry Rogers Motorsport - the same team that discovered champion drivers Garth Tander and Jamie Whincup.

“The team have done great to get one car on the track,” McLaughlin says. “I think we've got a good package, and I think we'll be good for next year.”

McLaughlin is set for a busy 2013, after pledging to defend his New Zealand Supertourer title.
