The Wellington Phoenix are playing down a report they will host English Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur in a pre-season match this year.

Reports on social media websites that Spurs will play in Wellington in July were brushed aside by Phoenix general manager David Dome, who said negotiations had taken place with several English clubs but no deal had been reached.

Most Premier League clubs undertake pre-season tours and Spurs have been linked with a visit to Asia.

An administrator on the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters Club New Zealand Facebook page on Monday said Spurs officials had met with marketing staff at Westpac Stadium and that a game was being discussed for July.

Westpac Stadium chief executive David Gray confirmed to Fairfax an approach had been made by the London-based team.

However, Gray said hosting such a game would be very expensive and it was common for teams to enquire about coming to New Zealand.

Phoenix chairman Rob Morrison has previously said the club are interested in lining up an off-season game against a Premier League side, either in New Zealand or Asia.

Current Premier League leaders Manchester United play will an exhibition game against an A-League all-stars team in Sydney on July 20.

Football Federation Australia is also in talks with Liverpool to play in Australia a week later.

The Phoenix's last high-profile pre-season match was in July 2010 when they beat Argentina giants Boca Juniors 2-1 in Wellington.
