Campbell Live meets Sirocco the kakapo

Tuesday 15 Sep 2009 7:18 p.m.

There was a time when the kakapo was the third most common bird in New Zealand, plentiful in both the north and south islands.

Then it was hunted and its habitat destroyed. Predators brought the nocturnal parrot to the brink of extinction.

Today it is found only on Codfish and Anchor Islands and is fiercely protected.

Current numbers for the big fat flightless bird sit at 124. They would be a lot less if not for a booming mating season, which saw 33 chicks born.

As part of conservation week, Aucklanders are being treated to something very special – a rare chance to meet a kakapo called Sirocco.

John Campbell spoke to kakapo fanatic Nic Valance, who is a zoologist and DOC’s National Media Advisor.
