Finding our new Race Relations Commissioner

Monday 1 Apr 2013 8:06 p.m.

The Prime Minister has described her as a "practical New Zealander who understands New Zealand issues and will do a good job".

The job he was referring to is that of race relations commissioner and from tomorrow the job will be done by former world champion squash player Dame Susan Devoy.

Dame Susan is a national hero who has raised the profile of squash and sport in general in New Zealand.

We wanted to speak with her ahead of her first day about the new job - a part-time position that will pay her $200,000 each year, for five years.

As a public figure, paid by the taxpayer, we wanted to know why she was the best person for the job, why she applied, what she's been doing since her retirement from squash and what she hoped to bring to her new role.

For the past week Campbell Live has phoned and emailed her but received no response and even when contacting her office couldn't secure an interview.

So where is our new race relations commissioner?

Watch as Rebecca Wright travels to Dame Susan's hometown of Tauranga to find out.
