Grafton Bridge - the $150 shortcut
Grafton Bridge is making the Auckland City Council rich.
Since reopening in December, 11,000 cars have been snapped crossing the bridge between 7am and 7pm, each time costing the drivers $150.
The council has, as of late February, raked in $1.7 million in fines
Between 7am and 7pm, the bridge is only allowed to be used by buses, cycles, mopeds and motorcycles - but the message doesn't seem to be getting through.
The council says it was staggered by the number of cars coming over the bus lane initially, so more signs went up. Then more. And more.
But still motorists are using the bridge.
