Is this New Zealand's biggest trout catch?

Monday 17 Dec 2012 7:57 p.m.

They call them ‘canal monsters,’ and just when they think they can get no bigger, another whopper is hauled in from the deep.

Evan Johnson from Timaru is the latest to re-write the record books with his enormous – some might say freakish – brown trout that’s just a couple of pounds shy of a world record catch.

It’s believed no-one has ever caught a bigger brown trout in New Zealand waters.

But why are these fish growing so big? And why do some people say it's not really fishing at all?

Watch Jendy Harper’s report from the Mackenzie Basin.

Note: Margaret Logan was incorrectly introduced in this report as the owner of Mt Cook Salmon, when she is in fact an owner of High Country Salmon. We apologise for the error.
