One year later, milk in schools programme reassessed

Monday 10 Dec 2012 5:11 p.m.

In December last year, 12 months ago this week, Fonterra announced a milk in schools programme to be trialled across 110 primary schools in Northland. It began rolling out in March.

It was a response to high milk prices, childhood poverty, and kids turning up at school with little or nothing in the way of truly nutritious food.

Now Fonterra is considering its next steps. Should the scheme continue? Should it spread to other parts of the country? And if so, how will it be managed, to deliver cold milk to kids who want it and most effectively respond to need?

Today, Campbell Live want to Waikato, arguably the milk growing capital of the world, and to a school that's part of the KidsCan programme because each day some kids are turning up with insufficient food. John Campbell asked whether they want milk in their school.
