Reef's days as a dive spot could be over

Tuesday 18 Oct 2011 4:11 p.m.

The Astrolabe Reef may never be seen again in the state it was pre-Rena - an underwater landscape brimming with life.

Most of us had never heard of the reef before the Rena hit it, but diver Shane Wasik has spent a lot of time on the reef, filming his favourite spot.

"It can be a real magical spot, blue water can get visual of up to 30m , and it's just a really, really amazing spot to dive in," he says.

Local divers now fear their beloved cave, just under where the Rena is now sitting, has been destroyed.

In stormy weather last week, massive swells rocked the ship from side to side. With each wave her keel and broken hull would have ground deeper into the reef.

What impact will the Rena have on local diving?
