The Parliament cleaners living on $14 an hour

Monday 7 Oct 2013 7:47 p.m.

This weekend we've heard a lot about the living wage. That's the campaign to lift wages to at least $18.40 an hour.

In Auckland, Mayor Len Brown has committed to the principal of paying council employees a living wage. In Wellington, mayoral hopefuls have done the same.

But for three years now the central government has simply refused to consider the idea. In fact a week ago, National MP Tau Henare made news for the way he responded to questions around raising wages for Parliament's cleaners.

Mr Henare later apologised for his comments but it got Campbell Live thinking: What is life like in the top house of this country after leaders like Mr Henare have gone home?
