Trans-Tasman drink-driving blitz starts tonight

Friday 7 Dec 2012 5:03 p.m.

Police are planning a trans-Tasman blitz on alcohol-fuelled crime at the weekend.

New Zealand and Australian police have joined forces for Operation Unite, which targets drunk driving, underage drinking and alcohol-related violence over the weekend.

It will involve overt and covert licensing operations, random breath testing, dog squads, additional police patrols and, in Australia, mounted police.

"The impacts of alcohol related offending accounts for almost 20 per cent of the police budget," national road policing manager Superintendent Carey Griffiths says.

They include a quarter of traffic offences, 20 per cent of crashes, 50 per cent of serious violence cases and a third of family violence cases.

"That has to change," Supt Griffiths said.

The operation runs from 6am on Friday to 6pm on Sunday.
