What is Fisher & Paykel up to?

Lay-offs, redundancies, the high exchange rate, businesses moving off shore — when it comes to manufacturing there have been some pretty negative headlines over the past couple of years.

That is why we thought it was interesting that Fisher & Paykel, which is of course now owned by a Chinese company, is trying to recruit up to 100 new research and development staff, including designers, engineers and scientists.

Investment in research and development is considered essential to grow the New Zealand economy, but what does that mean in practical terms and why is it so important to a company like Fisher & Paykel?
