Global recession sees increase in fast-food consumption

Saturday 28 Feb 2009 6:25 p.m.

The global recession is proving a boon to fast food giants, as more and more people choose cheap and easy meal options.

The trend has also sparked health fears and more evidence of the link between diet and cancer, highlighting a risk from low-cost food high in salt, sugar and fat.

In Britain, McDonald's just had its best year ever, while KFC's profits rose 14 percent.

Following an American trend, fast-food giants have promised healthier options. But what is most popular is still a burger and fries or a bucket of chicken.

With one-in-four adults and nearly one-in-five children dangerously overweight, Britain is quickly catching up to the US.
