The son of former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has called on Israel to escalate its current military assault and “flatten all of Gaza”.

In an inflammatory op-ed article for The Jerusalem Post,  Gilad Sharon dismisses any concern over the deaths of innocent Palestinian civilians as a result.

“The residents of Gaza are not innocent, they elected Hamas,” he writes.

At least 66 Palestinians have so far been killed in the most recent Israeli offensive. More than 30 civilians, including a number of elderly people and children, are among the dead.

Sharon compares the current situation between Israel and Hamas to the bombing of Japan by the United States at the end of World War Two.

“We need to flatten entire neighbourhoods in Gaza. Flatten all of Gaza. The Americans didn’t stop with Hiroshima – the Japanese weren’t surrendering fast enough, so they hit Nagasaki, too.”

As well as calling for even more aggressive military attacks on Gaza, Sharon advocates for holding the population of Gaza to ransom by cutting utilities.

“There should be no electricity in Gaza, no gasoline or moving vehicles, nothing. Then they’d really call for a ceasefire.”

Sharon remarks “the images from Gaza might be unpleasant”, and acknowledges there is growing international opposition to the ongoing violence, but says this simply means the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should act faster to secure what he calls “decisive victory”.

“The Netanyahu government is on a short international leash. Soon the pressure will start – and a million civilians can’t live under fire for long. This needs to end quickly – with a bang, not a whimper.”

Sharon argues the only alternative to the all-out destruction of Gaza is to “re-occupy the entire Gaza strip”.

According to his publisher HarperCollins, Sharon is a major in the Israel Defence Force (IDF) reserves.
